Canal Street Gallery upcoming shows

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – Canal Street Art Gallery presents the sixth annual Vermont Summer Group Show, the Medora Hebert “For the Love of Bog” solo show, and the Jennifer L. Anderson “When Summer Sings” solo show. All three shows open on Third Friday Gallery Night in historic downtown Bellows Falls, Vt., on June 21. Join the gallery from 5-7 p.m. to celebrate summer in Vermont with an opening reception for the artists, accompanied by live music from Kenneth Rokicki playing electric/synthesized guitar, and acoustic six- and 12-string guitar. All gallery events are free and open to the public; for wheelchair accessibility, call 802-289-0104.

The sixth annual Vermont Summer Group Show is honored to include artwork from the following 19 local artists: Christine Cole, Meghan Dougherty, Robert DuGrenier, Laura Dunbar, Len Emery, Nancy Fitz-Rapalje, Kathleen Govotski, Joshua Aron Gray, Brooks Heley, Margo Hubec, Deedee Jones, Carol Keiser, Jean Krasno, Kathy Lavine, Kestrel Marcel, Pat McPike, Walker Saville, Dierdre Michelle, and Teresa Zuverino.

Medora Hebert “For the Love of Bog” exhibits new printed images by the artist of one of her favorite places to practice photography: wetlands. Hebert is a photographer trained in photojournalism, and has creatively seen the medium from the darkroom to the digital studio, embracing the changes along the way. Pushing her work to new and uncertain places, the artist’s “For the Love of Bog” series finds abstract compositions using the textures, reflections, light, and wildlife of the bog.

The Jennifer L. Anderson “When Summer Sings” solo show is a collection of 11 watercolor paintings depicting the artist’s “spiritual study of life.” Artworks with titles such as “A Wonderful Peace (Barn Owl),” “Breathe in All the Stars (Rabbit),” “Curiosity (Raven),” and “The Grace of You (Bobcat),” all show Anderson’s effortless representations of wildlife, made in two dimensional compositions without backgrounds, presented as emotional portraits of the subjects.

The gallery also is excited to announce, with the opening of this summer’s show, the creation of its first contracted position of exhibition manager. Currently apprenticing for the position by managing the sixth annual Vermont Summer Group Show is Brooklyn Merrill of Charlestown, N.H. Merrill is currently pursuing degrees in art history and business, and can be reached at brooklyn@canalstreetartgalley.com.

This year, as part of the sixth annual Vermont Summer Group Show, the public is invited to participate in the voting process for awards given to three artworks in the show. Votes for favorite artworks are cast by in-person ballot at the gallery. The three artworks in the show with the top amount of votes will receive the following prizes. For third place, the artwork will be included in one of the gallery’s regular hanging displays at the Hartford and Guilford, Vt., welcome centers. The second-place artwork’s creating artist will receive a place in the 2024 Art for All Seasonal Group Show. The artist earning first place will be awarded a guest solo spotlight show at Canal Street Art Gallery, to be scheduled in 2025, a show typically offered only to represented artists.
