CAVENDISH, Vt. – The Cavendish-William French Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honors three high school seniors chosen as Good Citizens in their schools: Anna Bennett, of Green Mountain Union High School; Tatum E. Flanagan, of Windsor High School; and Gwendalyn Guild, of Bellows Falls Union High School.
Bennett was homeschooled for her first eight school years. At Green Mountain Union High School, she was a member of student government and served with maturity and dependability. She excelled academically in high school and in Advanced Placement courses. She served as captain of the junior varsity and varsity soccer teams, and also enjoyed participating in band, chorus, and theater. Bennett volunteered in many areas, including running sound and technical programs in her church. Volunteering at Chester-Andover Elementary School weekly during the winter helped her formulate her plans to pursue a degree in elementary education.
Flanagan, of Windsor High School, has taken advantage of the option to take accelerated English courses as well as excelling in a college English course. She also took medical and phlebotomy courses at Hartford Area Career and Technology Center, which helped her with her plan to pursue a degree in nursing. She was inducted into the National Honor Society and spent four years on the student council. She played field hockey and lacrosse for four years, and participated in theater, yearbook, and other high school activities. Flanagan is a Girl Scout and participated in community projects with them, including making bat houses for a local park and grief bags for surrounding schools.
Guild, of Bellows Falls Union High School, received awards in earth science, STEM, and music; the AP Scholar Award; and the UVM Green and Gold award; and was a member of the National Honor Society and the student council. She has organized fundraisers and a mentoring program between high school students and a local elementary school. Guild played flute and piccolo for all four years, and played in five different school musical groups, winning places in Vermont District and All State music festivals, and the New England Music Festival. She participated in soccer and tennis for all four years and won awards in both. She plans to attend a four-year college.
Each winner received a certificate, a pin, and a small stipend. All three students are exemplary Good Citizens, and the Cavendish-William French Chapter is proud of all of their accomplishments. We wish them every success as they start on the next stage in their lives.
