REGION – October is Fire Prevention Month, making it a good time to take a few simple steps to help protect your home and everyone in it. A little prevention now can make a big difference. Follow these tips pulled from the National Fire Protection Association.
Test smoke alarms
Make sure you have working alarms on every level, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Replace batteries as needed.
Check carbon monoxide detectors.
With heating season approaching, make sure detectors are working properly and placed where recommended.
Inspect heating equipment
Service furnaces, fireplaces, and chimneys as needed, and keep flammable items at least three feet away from heat sources.
Look for electrical hazards
Replace damaged cords, avoid overloaded outlets, and don’t use extension cords as permanent wiring.
Play it safe in the kitchen.
Stay nearby while cooking and keep towels, packaging, and other flammable items away from the stovetop.
Check fire extinguishers
Make sure they’re accessible and haven’t expired, and that adults in your home know how to use them.
Practice your escape plan
Identify exits, choose an outdoor meeting spot, and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
A safer home starts with a few simple habits. Add these checks to your fall home maintenance list and give yourself one more reason to feel good about the place you call home.
