SOUTH LONDONDERRY, Vt. – The Green Mountain Gardeners invite the public to attend an open discussion on raising fruits and berries in the home landscape on Monday, March 2, at 4 p.m., at the Rugg Valley Greenhouse, 968 Haven Hill Road in South Londonderry. The program will be led by Mark Wright, owner of Rugg Valley Landscaping. Attendees are asked to bring their own folding chairs. All are welcome.
Mark will speak from his experience, and give some practical tips on growing fruit trees and berries, and how to best use them to enhance the home grounds.
Wright has had a passion for plants all his life, and has built a life and a business working with plants and their practical and esthetic importance in our lives. He grew up in New York City, but his family spent every free moment in Vermont, which usually involved lugging plants and produce back and forth.
In high school, he was in charge of the school greenhouse as part of the school’s work program. It was his first experience working in a controlled growing environment, and it was an eye opener.
He attended Cornell University, where he majored in landscape architecture and horticulture. Thanks to some influential and enthusiastic professors, his interest in plants and landscape design flourished. However, one of the most important lessons he learned was that he didn’t want to spend his life in an office. When he graduated in 1974, he and his wife Sunny joined the back-to-the land movement, built their cabin in the woods, and started Rugg Valley Landscaping.
Mark has spent his life observing and learning. Like everything, the more you learn, the more you realize how much more there is to learn; growing edible fruits is no exception. Come learn about the beauty and practicality of growing fruits at your own home.
