REGION – Black River Action Team (BRAT) is pursuing several projects in the area, all focused on protecting or improving water quality and the healthy function of the Black River and several streams. Through a Project Development Grant from the State of Vermont, administered through Watersheds United Vermont, BRAT is working in Ludlow and Springfield on two sets of infiltration steps – open-bottomed, stone-filled steps built into the landscape to allow rainfall to seep into the soil below – replacing an undersized culvert with a small bridge in Plymouth, and stabilizing the shoreline of a property on Lake Rescue near the inflow of the Black River.
These projects require many hours of research and site visits, as well as communication with landowners, contractors, and both state and municipal staff. Through the Project Development Grant funding, BRAT is able to move projects from the initial concept phase through to realization. When each project is ready to be designed by an engineer or actually built by a qualified contractor, a different grant application is made to a separate program.
Project Development funding helps Black River Action Team move forward with projects on private land, keeping our local waterways healthy and properly functioning for the enjoyment of all.
