N. SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Dorothy Mae (Gavin) Ryan, 92, passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Mount Ascutney Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1934, in Barre, Vt. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Jeanette (Smith) Gavin; her bother, Emmett; and her sisters, Lucille and Mildred.
Dorothy attended school in Barre and Montpelier, Vt. She married Howard E. Ryan in June 1951, and settled in North Springfield, Vt. She was a stay-at-home mother for her two sons, Wayne and Michael, until they entered school, at which time she worked at Wilson Jewelers and later Wheeler Drugs for many years.
As an animal lover, she was a supporter of the Springfield Humane Society, and was especially fond of her cat, Catavich, who lived a long and happy life.
She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Howard; her sons Wayne (Colleen) and Mike (Lynn); four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private gathering will be held later at the family’s choosing. In lieu of flowers, please support the Springfield Humane Society.
