SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Bernard Ray Tanner Jr., 74, passed away on Aug. 30, 2026, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation in Springfield, Vt.
Bernard, who was known as “Bernie” or “Bern” to his friends and relatives, was born on Feb. 21, 1952, in Springfield, Vt., the son of Bernard Ray Tanner Sr. and Pauline (Maynard) Tanner, of Springfield.
Bernie attended school in Springfield, Vt., and graduated in 1970. In 1974, he married Carol Berry, of Springfield. Together they had two children, a son and a daughter.
He resided in Chester, Vt., for a few years, and worked at Montany Inc. After moving back to Springfield, he obtained a position as a machinist at Lovejoy Tool, where he remained until his retirement.
Bernie served in the Vermont National Guard. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Springfield, Vt., and served as the governor many years ago. He was also a member of the Springfield Elks Lodge, and the American Legion Post 67 in Chester, Vt.
Bernie is predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Pauline Tanner. He is survived by his son, Bernard Tanner III, of Rutland, Vt.; his daughter, Calista Tanner, of Windsor, Vt.; a brother, Douglas Tanner, of Chester, Vt.; and his longtime partner, Brenda Pierce, of Springfield, Vt. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Carter Tanner and Caelyn Tanner, of Windsor, Vt., and Myra Tanner, of Woodstock, Vt.; and a niece, Lisa Raetz, who resides in Pennsylvania.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion in Chester, Vt., on Oct. 18, from 12-3 p.m.
