WESTON, Vt. – Alan Clay Knapp, 72, of Weston, Vt., passed away on June 13, 2026.
Born on Aug. 15, 1953, he was the son of Arthur and Elaine (Leyser) Knapp. He is survived by his sister, Katherine “Kitty” (Harvey); his brother, Randall; his nephews, Jordan (Rachel), Clay (Marina), and Lyle (Natalie); and his great-nieces, Penelope, Maia, and Gina.
Alan graduated from Northport High School in 1971 and went on to attend Furman University, graduating in 1975. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1976-1980, honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant.
After his military service, he resided primarily in Vermont, spending his early civilian days working at Stratton and forming lasting friendships and community ties to the place that he called home.
Al was by no means a stationary guy. For much of his life, he pursued his work and passion as a travel photographer, during which time he was able to witness and capture parts of the world that few people have the opportunity to experience. Some of his works can be viewed at www.knappshot.com. He would always return home with a heap full of memories to recap for us in his yearly Christmas letters, which we all looked forward to reading.
Through all his world travels, when asked, Al would consistently say his favorite place in the whole wide world was “Scenic Route 100, Vermont, in autumn.” His answer always would come after a feigned effort of great thought, as if the answer would change, but it never did. He was a tireless member of the Weston Historical Society for many years, meticulously documenting the lives and places that meant most to him.
A celebration of life will be held in Weston, Vt., at a later date.
Alan will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, vast intellect, playful humor, and unmatched kindness. Our time together was too short. There were so many stories and laughs left to share. We will miss you forever and always, our beloved pal, Al.
