SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Now that Covid is mostly behind us and church restrictions lifted, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Springfield will be reintroducing an ancient custom. It is the celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. Although the actual feast day falls on Oct. 4, St. Mark’s celebration will be on Sunday, Oct. 8.
On St. Francis Day it is the tradition that animals and pets be blessed by the parish priest. At St. Mark’s, it is the Rev. Betty Berlenbach. This year’s blessing will happen after a service of Holy Eucharist, which starts at 8:30 a.m. People and pets are welcome to arrive for the service at 8:30 a.m., or at 10:00 a.m. for the blessing only, which will happen on the church lawn. In case of rain, the blessing will take place in the Parish Hall. Please do not leave any pets in your vehicle. We ask that all dogs be leashed, and cats and smaller animals in carriers; fish, turtles, and other pets of this type in their usual containers. Large beasts are also welcome, providing they are of gentle persuasion. This entire event is free, but if folks are as so inclined, they may bring pet foods, which will then be donated to the Springfield Humane Society. There will be light refreshments for both man and beast.
History tells us that St. Francis was born in Italy in 1181, to “privileged” parents. He was somewhat of a “hell-raiser” and “ladies-man” in his younger years, and it wasn’t until he was in his 20s that he realized his calling, and took a vow of poverty. He is now one of the most popular saints.
