New temporary quarters for emergency personnel at Ludlow Fire Station

LUDLOW, Vt. – New temporary quarters for emergency services personnel have been placed at the Ludlow Fire Station. In late 2025, the Ludlow Selectboard approved the creation of an emergency services building committee to address critical infrastructure concerns and long-term facility planning needs for the Ludlow Fire Department, Ludlow Ambulance Service, and Ludlow Police Department. The committee identified immediate safety and liability concerns within the existing ambulance service quarters. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the selectboard approved this capital purchase as a temporary solution while long-term facility options continue to be evaluated.

Ludlow Ambulance Service provides 24/7/365 emergency medical coverage to our community and neighboring towns. That level of service depends on having personnel ready to respond within minutes. Ambulance personnel regularly work shifts ranging from 12 hours to more than 24 hours and require appropriate quarters to support their operational responsibilities. The location of the new quarters was recommended by the building committee based on installation efficiencies, including proximity to existing water, sewer, and electrical connections, as well as the fire station, where several ambulance personnel also serve. These temporary quarters provide a safe and professional space for on-duty ambulance personnel while serving our community.

Ludlow Ambulance Service responds to approximately 1,000 calls for service each year and is staffed by full-time and per-diem employees of the Town of Ludlow. The relationship among Ludlow’s emergency services is critical to the community, and the close coordination between the fire department and EMS plays an integral role in the future of emergency services delivery in Ludlow. The ambulance service is actively exploring additional revenue opportunities that will support future growth in fire and rescue services, increase public safety capacity, and remain fiscally responsible to the community.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the emergency services building committee, Ludlow Highway Department, Ludlow Water & Sewer Department, Ludlow Electric Department, and local contractors, the site was prepared, and the unit has been delivered. Occupancy by personnel is expected by mid-May. This temporary solution represents an important step forward while the town continues planning for a long-term emergency services facility to support the needs of the community and its responders.
