LUDLOW, Vt. – The Ludlow Rotary Club recently welcomed guest speaker Patty Companik, president of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST).
Founded in 1967, VAST is a nonprofit, member-based organization that maintains Vermont’s 4,000-mile snowmobile trail system. This network is supported largely by dedicated volunteers, who groom trails, organize fundraisers, manage communications, and keep operations running smoothly. Their efforts help provide a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for riders of all ages and skill levels.
Companik emphasized the critical role of private landowners, noting that about 80% of Vermont’s trails cross privately owned land. She expressed VAST’s deep appreciation for the cooperation that makes the statewide trail system possible.
Snowmobiling is also a major economic driver, contributing more than $550 million annually to Vermont’s economy and supporting local businesses, from lodging and restaurants, to gas stations, repair shops, and equipment retailers. The ripple effect is felt throughout many rural communities, and even influences the real estate market, as seasonal visitors and second-home owners are drawn to areas with trail access.

Those interested in getting started are encouraged to explore guided rides through organizations such as Snowmobile Vermont, which provide instruction and a safe introduction to the trails. Riders must have a registered snowmobile, liability insurance, and a trail pass. Individuals born after 1983 must also complete a safety course.
