Katherine A. Howard, 1921-2026

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Katherine Ann Howard, of Burlington, Vt., passed away in Burlington on March 21, 2026, at the age of 104. Kay was born on July 23, 1921, in Bellows Falls, Vt. Her parents were Edward J. Howard and Ellen (O’Keefe) Howard. She attended St. Charles School and graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1938. She then attended and graduated from Bay Path Business School.

After business school, Kay worked for St. Michael’s College in Vermont, and for Vermont’s Congressman Meyer in Washington, D.C. Kay then worked as a legal secretary for many years for several Burlington lawyers before going to work as an administrative assistant for the United States Postal Service in 1975. She retired from the postal service in 1989.

Kay lived an independent life, proud of her ability to do so. She traveled in Europe, was a lifelong Democrat, enjoyed skiing and golf, and loved her Irish heritage. She loved books, reading even into the last year of her life. She was surrounded by a group of close friends, who enjoyed her wit, humor, and spirit, and kept her company in her later years.

Kay is survived by many nephews and nieces, great-nephews and -nieces, and great-great-nephews and -nieces. She was predeceased by her parents; her siblings Edward, James, John, Robert, Lawrence, and Daniel; and her sister and close friend Marie.

The family thanks the staff at Converse Home for their care of Kay, especially Diane.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial took place on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m., at St. Charles Church, Cherry Hill, in Bellows Falls, Vt. Burial followed at St. Charles Cemetery in Westminster.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Rockingham Public Library in Bellows Falls, Vt.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home, 55 Westminster Street, Bellows Falls, Vt.
