Angling and Donuts on the Saxtons River

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – Join your river steward, Kathy Urffer; VHCB AmeriCorps member Bay Holmes; and Water Way(s) Director Erin Maile O’Keefe, along with our friends from the Connecticut River Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, for angling along the Saxtons River on June 14, from 9-11:30 a.m., beginning at 91 Paper Mill Road in Bellows Falls. Register at for this event at www.ctriver.org/event.

We are welcoming community members, families, and children to join us with donuts and fishing rods for a couple of hours of relaxed angling. Members from the Connecticut River Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be on hand to help as needed with setting up lines, to give instruction on casting, and to explain how to read brooks for the best place to drop your line. We will help adults who need one purchase fishing licenses on site using a mobile app, while all kids 14 and under can fish without a license.

“This will be our fifth year of Angling and Donuts. Collectively, Connecticut River Conservancy, Trout Unlimited, local bakeries, and the Water Way(s) Project have provided this opportunity to all ages to fish for trout and other species along our public floodplains. Join us for one or both Sundays, bringing your favorite morning beverage in one hand and a donut and/or fishing pole in the other,” says O’Keefe.

Urffer continues, “We are so pleased to provide these events to reconnect our community members with their local rivers and streams. There is so much to learn about our native fish species and the importance of floodplain and river restoration projects that help to protect properties and our natural communities further downstream.”

“I am so excited to be a part of these events,” added Holmes, CRC’s AmeriCorp Service member. “Seeing community members connecting with each other and with our beautiful river is one of the most rewarding parts of serving with CRC.”

Join us on June 14 for some angling. We will provide fishing rods (or bring your own) and delicious donuts. Come discover the abundance of trout in your local waterway, try your hand at fly fishing or spin fishing, and learn about the impacts of climate change on our fish populations. Bring a comfy camp chair, along with your favorite humans and morning beverages for these sweet gatherings.

Anyone age 15 or older will need a Vermont fishing license. You can buy a fishing license online before the event. More information can be found at www.anrweb.vt.gov/FWD/FW/LicenseInformation.aspx.

This event is free, but we ask that you register so we order enough donuts and bring enough fishing rods. Register at www.ctriver.org/event.
