CHARLESTOWN, N.H. – On Sept. 12 and 13, experience the year 1776 at The Fort at No. 4 in Charlestown, N.H.
The American Revolution has arrived on the northern frontier. At “Return to No. 4,” history comes alive as soldiers, civilians, craftsmen, and families recreate life during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.
Walk through the fort, meet the Patriot soldiers, observe the military drills, hear the fife and drum, and experience the sights, sounds, and skills of the Revolutionary era.
Throughout the weekend, explore living-history demonstrations and hands-on presentations, including military skirmishes at 11 a.m. each day; silversmithing; leatherworking; powderhorn carving; beehive oven baking and hearth cooking; spinning, sewing, and Ipswich lace; basket weaving and pottery making; beekeeping; cidermaking; fife and drum; artillery talk and display; “The Under of It All” clothing presentation; doctoring and the Revolutionary War field hospital; crime, law, and punishment; the colonial schoolmaster; 18th-century toys and games; and children’s militia.
There will also be an author meet and greet with book signing with Skyler Bailey, author of “Nothing But Honor,” on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 12 p.m. The book is available in the museum gift shop.
And don’t miss the British Camps, where you can meet the soldiers of the Crown and learn what life was like on the other side of the conflict.
The centerpiece of the weekend is a dramatic Revolutionary War tactical demonstration and battle, bringing the sights, sounds, smoke, and confusion of the battlefield to life, at 2 p.m. each day. Afterward, visit the field hospital and discover what happened to the wounded once the fighting stopped.
