LONDONDERRY, Vt. – For 17 years, Neighborhood Connections has served as the go-to agency in southern Vermont’s Mountain Towns for matters of health and wellbeing. Located in the Mountain Marketplace in Londonderry, the agency serves residents in a 12-town region encompassing parts of Windham, Windsor, and Bennington counties. It currently operates a transit fleet providing more than 6,000 free rides each year; delivers almost 20,000 Meals on Wheels and hosts another 2,500 community members at community meals; conducts a dozen exercise classes; and provides social work for hundreds of residents, completing and submitting applications for food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs, fuel assistance, electric discounts, and more.
The agency recently started a new program, Remembering Together, which provides activities for those suffering from cognitive decline and their caregivers. To accommodate its growing services, it recently acquired additional meeting space in the complex where its offices are located, and has developed a series of off-site activities in Bondville, Chester, and Jamaica.
In the last year, Neighborhood Connections made national headlines for medical interventions made during Meals on Wheels deliveries, and Executive Director Thom Simmons has been a featured speaker in both Washington and Montpelier on transportation for seniors, addressing housing needs, and employing home meal deliveries as a door toward providing more holistic services to vulnerable senior populations.
