CLAREMONT, N.H. – Claremont MakerSpace, in partnership with the City of Claremont, is launching a new art walk featuring 14 locations throughout the city.

Felicia Dalke, executive director of Claremont MakerSpace, explained that the walk will start at the visitors center, proceed to the Creative Center, through downtown, past city hall, then to Broad Street Park – where there is a Civil War sculpture – and end at the library.

Dalke explained that the library has a lot of historic art pieces and is bringing out a new exhibit of works by Albert Bierstadt, a 19th-century German American painter known for his large-scale, dramatic landscapes. “He came to Claremont several times and he painted Mount Ascutney from here,” Dalke said. “He also painted these little butterflies…and Claremont has two original butterflies that he painted, as well as his paint box [that] the historical society has.”

Dalke continued, “We are launching at the [Claremont] Fall Festival [& Chili Cook-off] on Oct. 3 over in Visitors Center Park.” The arts commission will have a tent at the festival to introduce visitors to a GPS-guided app that provides the art walk route, map, and information about the individual stops and artwork.

The art walk will feature both indoor and outdoor art, Dalke said. Claremont has an abundance of art, and the goal is to educate people of the “modern and historic art that already exists throughout Claremont and is open to the public.”

Along the art walk, visitors will find exhibits of various types of visual art, including paintings, sculpture, quilts, and textiles. “The MakerSpace – we’re a stop on the art walk. People can come in and see what our artist in residence is doing,” Dalke explained. “We also have the mural outside and we have businesses that sell arts and crafts along the walk, or they may have a gallery.”

The current artist in residence is John Garoutte, who is working on his Claremont mural.

Claremont MakerSpace is a 501(c)(3) established in 2014 by artists, educators, and tradespeople with the goal of enriching the community through collaboration and creativity. The MakerSpace provides workspace, classes, and access to equipment for members.
