Rockingham Planning Commission seeks input on draft flood hazard regulations

April 30 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

ROCKINGHAM, Vt. – The Rockingham Planning Commission will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, April 30, at 6 p.m., at the Rockingham Town Hall, in the lower theater. As part of that meeting, they will discuss the latest draft of the Flood and Fluvial Erosion Hazard Bylaws. This meeting offers residents of Rockingham an opportunity to review and provide feedback on regulations designed to protect the community from future flooding and erosion events.

The draft bylaws aim to: (1) protect public health and safety by minimizing the loss of life and property due to inundation and fluvial erosion; (2) ensure eligibility for federal flood insurance, disaster recovery funds, and hazard mitigation grants; and (3) manage development in high-risk areas, such as river corridors and Special Flood Hazard Areas, to ensure long-term stream equilibrium and health.

The proposed regulations outline specific standards for new construction, substantial improvements to existing structures, and activities within sensitive river environments. Community participation is vital to ensure these bylaws meet the needs of local citizens and businesses while providing necessary protection against environmental hazards and maintaining the vital functionality of river and stream corridors. This will be the first of several opportunities for the public to provide input.

The meeting will also be available via Zoom (meeting ID: 871 4404 7619, passcode: planning).

All interested parties are encouraged to attend. The draft document (Draft 7, dated April 10) is available for public review at the town hall zoning office, or online at www.rockinghamvt.org.
