3rd Annual Palestine Film Series Opens with Epic Historical Drama

The 3rd annual Palestine Film Series opens at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro on Sunday, April 12, with the Oscar-shortlisted film Palestine 36. This sweeping epic brings to life a pivotal period in history before the formation of the state of Israel. In the months leading up to the Great Arab Revolt of 1936, tensions between Palestinians and British are rising.
With an influx of Jewish refugees and divisions within the Palestinian community, Yusuf is torn between his village home and his work in Jerusalem. The choices that he makes are woven into a tapestry of perspectives — from fellow villagers, to struggling dock workers, to journalists, and British soldiers and officials. Writer and director Annemarie Jacir and a stellar cast of actors, including Hiam Abbass, Jeremy Irons and Saleh Bakri, have created an unforgettable film that resonates with history that is unfolding today.
The Palestine Film Series runs three more consecutive Sundays. The award-winning film, Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, will be featured on April 19. The Oscar-nominated dramatization of real events, The Voice of Hind Rajab, will screen on April 26. The series concludes on May 3 with a documentary, Aisha’s Story, and a short feature, Exception, that express Palestinians’ resolve to uphold their culture and identity.
“As war spreads to countries throughout the Middle East, these films are as vital and timely as ever,” notes Shana Frank, the film series coordinator. “They pay tribute to those who have lost their lives and highlight the challenges that proud, resilient Palestinians have faced for decades.”
The Palestine Film Series is hosted by Latchis Arts and sponsored by Southern Vermont for Palestine, a grassroots group that calls for freedom, justice, equality, and sovereignty for all people living in the region between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. Palestinian artwork and products will be for sale in the theater lobby along with information about local Palestinian solidarity initiatives.
This four-part film series will be held on Sundays, 4 pm–6 pm. Screenings will be followed by moderated conversations. The Latchis Theatre, at 50 Main St., Brattleboro VT, is accessible. Masking is requested. Admission is by donation. For details about the films, visit www.svt4palestinefilmseries.org.
