To the editor,
If Sen. Bernie Sanders and Pat Leahy care at all about animal welfare, which most politicians pay lip service to, they should support increased funding for cultivated-meat research. For those who don’t know, cultivated meat is grown from livestock cells, without slaughter. It has the potential to do so much good.
We kill over a trillion aquatic and land animals every year for food. The amount of suffering this represents is beyond comprehension. To put it in perspective, only about 117 billion humans have ever lived, according to the Population Reference Bureau.
Cellular agriculture will allow us to continue eating meat, without this horrific violence. Increased public funding for research in the field will help cultivated meat reach price parity with slaughtered products. Legislators who have any compassion for our fellow creatures should support it.
Sincerely,
Jon Hochschartner
