The Town of Springfield and Springfield High School have a variety of beautiful historic murals around town and in the school created by students. While Lisa Murray was an art teacher at Springfield High School, she worked with students to research, plan, and create these murals. She also had students reproduce art by different artists on the walls in the high school.
I have heard that there are plans to paint over some of these works in the high school. I am asking parents, former students, and teachers to speak out to save this work. It can be painted around.
When we walked into the building at the start of the school year in the late 1990s, works in the lobby had been painted over. Students and staff were dismayed. Lisa was duly upset, because if the work was deteriorating, it would be a great project for students to learn to restore art and could become a class project. Student work should not just be painted over without considering the history and opportunity to turn it into a new project.
