CHESTER, Vt. – The historic building located at 12 The Common in Chester dates back to approximately 1820, and was at different points a restaurant, bar, and residence before becoming home to Thyme & Again Apothecary and Wellness earlier this year.

Owned and operated by the Golden family, Thyme & Again is a quiet, inviting spot just steps off the village green. Visiting the rustic retail shop with its charmingly off-kilter wide plank floors, exposed brick, and twinkle lighting feels akin to a warm hug. The air is scented with the combined aromas of candles, lotions, essential oils, herbs, and blended teas that line the shelves and display tables.

Michelle and Charlie Golden, natives of Springfield, Vt., and high school sweethearts, made the decision to purchase the apothecary from the previous owner while away celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Their daughter Vaylyn had started working at the shop and studying herbology, finding the work to be meditative and therapeutic. She told her parents it was her “dream job.” The shop’s owner at the time, Amber Ham, had developed a friendship with Michelle and approached her with the opportunity.

Michelle, a mental health counselor, and Charlie, road foreman for the Town of Andover, decided to take on ownership of the shop. With the help of Vaylyn’s sister, Jayda, the Goldens have teamed up to run the place, and each family member has a role.

Michelle’s vision involves continuing to create a comfortable, relaxing space for everyone who stops by, offering natural healing remedies and wellness products. Vaylyn is usually behind the counter, running the day-to-day operations of the retail shop, while Jayda works behind the scenes as bookkeeper and office administrator. Charlie referred to himself as “the plumber,” but the family calls him “the shop dog” and relies on him to keep things working.

Time spent browsing and studying the store’s organic and natural products can be a calming and educational experience. Many of the recipes for the tinctures, tallow, hair oils, and sprays were passed on to Vaylyn and her family by Ham, founder of Songbird Wellness. Among the magical potions that relieve pain and stress are locally produced items and gifts like ceramics, infused honey, soaps, hand-painted greeting cards, and so much more. Vaylyn enjoys experimenting with different tea and mushroom blends.

In a tranquil back room, massage therapist Amanda McAllister offers clients Swedish and deep tissue massage and sound therapy.
