PUTNEY, Vt. – Next Stage Arts presents a special screening of “New Clothes,” the feature film debut from Vermont Suitcase Films, on Friday, June 19, at 7 p.m., at Next Stage Arts, 15 Kimball Hill in Putney. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are available at www.nextstagearts.org.
Based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “New Clothes” reimagines the beloved fable through the inventive lens of Vermont Suitcase Company, a troupe known for creating fast, funny, and accessible theater throughout Vermont.
Shot in just seven days on the fourth floor of an apartment building in downtown Brattleboro, the film unfolds in a whimsical, timeless kingdom where painted canvas backdrops and cardboard scenery coexist with refrigerators and radiators. The story follows two impoverished swindlers who scheme their way into the royal palace, hoping to enrich themselves by convincing the emperor and his court to surrender the very clothes on their backs.
Founded in 2018 by Vermont theater professionals and educators, Vermont Suitcase Company has built a devoted following by bringing theatrical performances directly to communities across the state. Traveling with four poles, a large curtain, and a dozen suitcases filled with costumes and props, the company performs in venues ranging from libraries and community centers to pizza parlors and bars.
“‘New Clothes’ is our feature-film debut, and we’re thrilled to bring our passion for theatrical storytelling and scrappy, imaginative aesthetics to a broader audience,” say members of the creative team. “The film captures the spirit of our live performances while embracing the possibilities of cinema.”
Following the screening, audience members are invited to stay for a discussion with members of the film’s creative team.
Vermont Suitcase Company’s mission has remained consistent since its founding: to make theater accessible, affordable, and welcoming to everyone. The company tours Vermont twice annually and creates productions designed to entertain audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Before every performance, the company shares a simple belief with audiences: “Theater should be a party – and everyone’s invited.”
