Latchis Theatre presents two events centered on “The Trouble With Harry”

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – More than 70 years after Alfred Hitchcock filmed “The Trouble With Harry” in Vermont, in 1954, and returned for its 1955 world premiere in Barre, Hollywood, VT brings the story back through the voices, artists, and communities of Vermont today.

On Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., the historic Latchis Theatre hosts a one-night-only, largely unrehearsed and unrecorded live screenplay reading of John Michael Hayes’ adaptation of Jack Trevor Story’s novel. It is a rare chance to watch performers try on a screenwriter’s words in real time – scripts in hand, with room for improvisational energy, happy accidents, and play.

Not the suspense most people expect from Hitchcock, this dry, macabre romantic comedy follows a corpse on a Vermont hillside and the neighbors who cannot quite agree what to do about him. Sometimes called Hitchcock’s “lost masterpiece,” the 1955 film marked Shirley MacLaine’s screen debut

Then, on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., Hitchcock’s original 1955 film returns to the Latchis big screen, followed by a community conversation moderated by documentary filmmaker Bess O’Brien, with Hitchcock scholar Steven DeRosa and filmmaker/performer Jeanine B. Frost.
