SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Prismatic Utopia: Exploring the Uses of Color in Shaker Life
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy welcomes multimedia artist Brece Honeycutt whose long-term project\, Prismatic Utopia\, explores the practical\, temporal\, and spiritual uses of color in the Shaker community between 1790 and 1860. Shaker writings carefully documented where color could be used\, who applied it\, and even the paint formulas themselves. Particular attention is given to Prussian blue and chrome yellow\, colors that symbolically linked heaven and utility. This talk suggests that Shaker communities sought to create a physical utopia adorned in color—a true prismatic utopia\, where heaven and earth reflect one another. Registration is $20 per person. DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy is excited to partner with the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Manchester Historical Society to present this talk about the extraordinary history of art in our region. Manchester Historical Society curator\, Shawn Harrington traces the evolution of art in Southern Vermont\, from the early Dorset painters of the 1920s to the lasting influence of Bartlett Arkell and the founding of the Southern Vermont Artists. Through stories of artists\, patrons\, and the community\, it explores how a regional movement grew into the Southern Vermont Arts Center and shaped a lasting cultural legacy that continues today with the vision presented in For the Love of Vermont: The Lyman Orton Collection.
