SUMMARY:GMALL Presents – Pagan\, Jewish\, and Christian Women in the Roman Empire: Literary and Archaeological Evidence
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy welcomes author Valerie Abrahamsen to talk about women in the Roman Empire. How much do we really know about women’s lives in the ancient world — and how much has been obscured\, mistranslated\, or simply overlooked? This presentation takes a fresh look at women across Graeco-Roman cults\, Judaism\, and early Christian communities\, drawing on both literary sources and archaeological findings to reveal roles far more expansive than traditional accounts suggest. From priestesses and synagogue leaders to missionaries and apostles\, women shaped religious life in the Roman Empire in ways that challenge long-held assumptions. We’ll also examine how centuries of misinterpretation have influenced Western traditions — and how archaeology can help set the record straight\, with implications for justice and equality today. Registration is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents – Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War – for Better and for Worse
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning welcomes author and historian\, Candice Shy Hooper\, to talk about the wives of Lincoln’s generals. You know the old adage: behind every great man\, there is a great woman\, but as with most things in life\, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Most accounts of American Civil War have largely neglected the extraordinary and influential lives of Jessie Frémont\, Nelly McClellan\, Ellen Sherman\, and Julia Grant\, the wives of Abraham Lincoln’s top generals. They were their husbands’ closest confidantes and had a profound impact on the generals’ ambitions and actions. In Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War – for Better and for Worse\, Candice Shy Hooper triangulates Lincoln\, his top generals and their wives to show how the wives’ views of Lincoln impacted their husbands\, and ultimately\, the course of the Civil War. One prominent Civil War historian wrote that the book helps us better understand how the generals’ wives “helped shape them into heroes — or failures.” Registration for this program is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Even War Has Rules
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy welcomes attorney Chris Hardaway to talk about the rules of war. \nThe International Committee of the Red Cross estimates that over 120-armed conflicts rage across the globe today. At times it may seem that there are no rules in war. But as this program will demonstrate\, ‘Even War has Rules.’ This discussion of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) will address topics such as: \n· The sources of law and rules that apply to armed conflicts; \n· The fundamental principles of IHL that guide development of these rules; \n· And how IHL protects people and places during armed conflicts. \nBy the end of the program\, participants will achieve a general understanding of IHL and will be better able to evaluate the actions of parties to armed conflicts. \nThis program is free and open to all\, or pay what you wish to support Green Mountain Academy. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Democracy and Economics: Can Democracies Thrive Without Growth?
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy welcomes economist\, Peter Radford\, to talk about economics and democracy\, and how the two are inextricably linked. Financial Times columnist Martin Wolf has argued that modern democracy is\, at its core\, a product of sustained economic growth — and that when growth slows\, democracy fades. But is this truly the case? And if so\, what does it mean for the future of the post-industrial West? This discussion untangles the complex ties between economic performance and democratic resilience\, explores whether today’s democracies are at risk\, and considers how they might be reinvented for a digital age. This talk will also be available online via live stream. Registration is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - From MD&G Railroad to Historic Rail Trail
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning is excited to partner with the Manchester Historical Society to present this talk about the Historic Rail Trail in Manchester. The transformation of the Manchester\, Dorset\, and Granville (MD&G) Railroad into a modern recreational trail represents over a century of industrial and community history. Beginning in 1901\, the Norcross-West Co. developed the railroad and a state-of-the-art finishing mill to transport over 500\,000 cubic feet of “Dorset White” marble for the construction of the New York Public Library\, then the largest marble building in the world. Following the cessation of operations in 1918\, and removal of the rails in 1934\, the line sat for decades fading from memory until a vision emerged to preserve this corridor as a public asset by the formation of Old Railroad Bed\, LLC\, which purchased the land in 2009. The project involved significant land and infrastructure donations\, including legal challenges and hundreds of hours of work by volunteers overseeing the trail’s construction until the Town of Manchester officially took ownership following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 2\, 2023. Join Manchester Historical Society (MHS) Curator Shawn Harrington and MHS Board Member Bill Badger for a presentation covering the century of history and change. This program is free and open to all – or pay what you wish and support local history at a level that feels right to you. SUMMARY:The Presidential Library: Books that Shaped Washington\, Jefferson\, Lincoln\, Roosevelt\, and Others
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Bard College Professor Joseph Luzzi to guide us through a fascinating “Presidents’ Library\,” as we explore the books that shaped six of the most powerful men to ever sit in the Oval Office. We will discuss why George Washington was obsessed with a play about a Roman freedom fighter who opposed Julius Caesar; how Thomas Jefferson came to have the largest personal library in the country; what drew Abraham Lincoln to Shakespeare so obsessively (and which Shakespeare play he loved most); which British poet Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorized as a child and read throughout his life; why John F. Kennedy was devoted to a spy novelist whose books would create one of the greatest film franchises in history; and how Barack Obama came to understand his American identity and spirit through two favorite authors. Together\, we will see how presidential action and presidential reading are intimately linked\, as we explore the momentous events in these presidents’ lives considering the books that inspired their thoughts and guided their actions. Professor Luzzi will also summarize his ”ALL” (American Library List) detailing the sometimes-surprising books and literature\, which influenced many other U.S. leaders. The Zoom link will be sent 24 hours in advance of the program. For more information or to register please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Hope is Wild: Land Trusts and the Path to Rewilding the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Jon Leibowitz\, CEO of Northeast Wilderness\, to talk about the essential work of land trusts\, explaining how they function and why they are central to the future of conservation. This talk will also highlight a particularly powerful and hopeful strategy known as rewilding. The evidence tells us that the forever-wild approach can halve biodiversity loss on protected lands while increasing forest carbon storage. Land trusts are critical in helping Vermont achieve the objectives of Act 59\, the Community Resilience and Biodiversity Protection Act\, which establishes the ambitious goal to conserve 30% of Vermont’s lands and waters by 2030. SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Widening the Aperture: A War Photographer’s World
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Ashley Gilbertson\, an Australian photographer based in New York City recognized as one of the best documentary photographers working in the U.S. today\, to talk about his life as a war photographer. Sometimes war photographers must tell the whole story in a single image\, never knowing whether that’s all the viewer will see. That doesn’t make every picture perfect\, but it does make every picture essential\, worth taking whatever risks are necessary to get it. And it gives the good photographers a special way to look at the world around them. Ashley Gilbertson has covered the wars in Afghanistan\, Iraq\, and Ukraine\, as well as the January 6 riot and countless other domestic and foreign stories. The conversation will be moderated by Susan Weiss\, a Vermont-based photographer\, filmmaker\, and art educator. Registration for this program is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please visit greenmtnacademy.org or call our office at 802-867-0111.
