LUDLOW, Vt. – Robert F. Billings Sr., 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018 in Rutland, Vt., surrounded by his family.
Born in Pawlet, Vt. Oct. 24, 1931 to Anna and Gilbert Billings, he grew up on a farm in Plymouth, Vt.
He served in the military, first with the National Guard and was activated in the Korean War. He married Shirley Wheeler in 1956, and then joined the U.S. Navy, serving on ships in the Mediterranean, spending eight months at sea.
Following his service in the Navy, Robert and Shirley moved to Ludlow, Vt. and raised their family.
Bob retired from Joy Manufacturing after 25 years and moved with his wife to Plymouth, Vt. Bob worked for East Hill Equipment and then at the Coolidge State Historic Site before retiring a second time and moving to Rutland, Vt. in 2017.
He was a member of the Ludlow Fire Department and Ambulance, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus, and belonged to the Church of Annunciation in Ludlow.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Shirley; his four children Robert, Lonni, Tracy, and Lisa; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Friday evening, Sept. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, Vt. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 8 at noon at the Church of Annunciation in Ludlow, Vt., burial to follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Ludlow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of Annunciation in Ludlow, Vt. or the Ludlow Fire Department.
