LUDLOW, Vt. – Robert E. Kathan, known to most as “Buster” or “BK,” passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 in Ludlow, Vt. He was born Oct. 22, 1949 in Brattleboro, Vt., the son of Robert E. Sr. and Phyllis (Kenerson) Kathan. He graduated from Black River High School, class of 1967, and from Albany School of Business, class of 1971.

Buster enjoyed a long career in various businesses, many in the automotive field, most recently with Hunter Engineering for over 10 years. He was a member of the Vermont Soccer Officials Association for over 30 years and the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials for over 40 years. His love for sports was fulfilled by officiating and coaching in the area for over 25 years and led to countless lasting friendships and relationships.

BK especially loved car racing and was active for many years at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, Vt., racing his vintage coupe, #13. The Speedway honored him with a moving tribute last Saturday night after learning of his passing.

Buster found great enjoyment in spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is loved by friends and family and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his mother Phyllis Kathan of Ludlow; longtime companion Carol Laundry of Ludlow, Vt.; daughter Shannon Kathan of Proctorsville, Vt.; sons Tyler Kathan of Lebanon, N.H., Tim Olesky of Andover, Vt., and Christopher Olesky of Ludlow, Vt.; brother Gregory Kathan of Ludlow, Vt.; sisters Michelle Stinson of Ludlow and Cynthia Murray of Belchertown, Mass.; and three grandchildren Cameron, Owen, and Nora. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his faithful canine friend Mazzie.

Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vt. Friday evening, Sept. 7, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Ludlow, Vt., with a celebration of his life at Sam’s Steakhouse immediately following.

Memorial contributions may be made to the “BK13 Fund for the Coupes” at Bear Ridge Speedway, 1058 Kidder Rd., Bradford, VT 05033.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
