SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Preston A. Childs, 91, went home to be with his Lord July 24, 2019. Preston was born July 6, 1928 in Orleans, Mass., the son of Adelbert and Lillias (Stackpole) Childs.

He was predeceased by his parents, sister Myrtle Northwood, brother George Childs, his niece Karen Northwood, and first wife Beatrice Stevens.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Shirley (Morash) Childs; children Gary Childs, Denis Childs, Jeffrey Childs, Ramona Sheehan, Rebecca Childs, and Annette Childs; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a nephew and niece.

Preston was a commercial pilot and flight instructor, flying for Cape and Islands Flight Services at Hyannis Airport in Massachusetts for five years. He flew VIP charters, medical supplies, freight, and fire, police, and shark patrol for Barnstable, Mass. He then flew for Nauset Airways Inc. at Chatham Airport with similar duties.

In 1966, Preston moved to Springfield, Vt. to fly for Buker Airways out of Hartness Airport. His family soon joined him, and he flew for another 10 years before retiring from flying. Preston worked at Bryant Grinder Co. for a short time before starting C&C Equipment, an outdoor power equipment business. He was later approached to start a similar business for Biben’s Ace Hardware, where he worked until retiring.

Preston’s hobbies included restoring antique engines and tractors and later, when mobility became a problem, working on his computer formatting old home movies and pictures to DVD and supporting his church family with prayers and devotions.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 24, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Open Bible Baptist Church, 168 Cemetery Rd., Ascutney, Vt.
