WESTMINSTER, Vt. – Betty Jean Holton, 95, passed away on Oct. 27, 2017. Holton was a resident of Lecanto, Fla. and Westminster, Vt. Holton was the daughter of AA and Grace Newton of Kansas City, Mo. and born Feb. 2, 1922.
While attending college and working at the Kansas City Star newspaper as a journalist, Holton enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1944. While stationed in San Francisco, she met her future husband, William B. Holton, a United States Marine also stationed in San Francisco.
After the war ended, the Holtons settled in Westminster and ran Holton Farms. Holton was the town clerk and never lost an election until she retired in 1986.
The Holtons picked up the game of golf at age 50 and enjoyed meeting many new friends all over the world. The Holtons were long time members of the Hooper Golf Club in Walpole, N.H. as well as the Plantation Golf Club and Spa in Crystal River, Fla.
Holton was predeceased by her husband, William B. Holton in 2006 and her sister, Mary Janke. Holton is survived by her daughter, Nancy Goutas, of Beverly Hills, Fla., sons, David Holton (Michele) of Essex Jct. Vt., and Joel Holton (Helma) of Westminster. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ira (Paige) Divoll, Ian (Erica) Divoll, Lindsay (Kevin) O’Fallon, Christopher Holton, Seth (Caitlin) Holton, Maria (Garin) Clough, Christina (Rick) Hamm and ten great-grandchildren, and her special friend, Carl Kinney of Spring Hill, Fla.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Westminster on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 at 11 a.m. with burial at the Holton Family plot at the New Cemetery on Kurn Hattin Road. A reception will follow the burial at the First Congregational Church. Bequests in Holton’s memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, PO Box 122, Westminster, VT, 05158.
