The Harned-Fowler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6471 in Manchester, Vt. is looking for new members. The Post was established in 1946 and was named after two local boys who died during World War II. As written by William West “James P. Harned, U.S. Air Force, a 1940 graduate of Burr & Burton, died on July 1, 1942 from malaria while being held in a prisoner of war camp in the Philippines…Harvey Klapp Fowler, U.S. Marines, was a 1935 graduate of Burr & Burton. He was killed by mortar fire while landing on Guam in August of 1944.”
In addition to many vets from the Vietnam War and earlier conflicts, several of our members served in our more recent conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, our newly elected Post Commander is a 30-year old vet and other Post officers are in their 40s and 50s.
The Post is a frequent and generous contributor to many local worthy causes. For example, in 2018 alone we provided several financial scholarships to local students, contributed to the Bart Center for Adaptive Sports, hosted a free Christmas lunch for local families, donated to the Vermont Veteran’s Home in Bennington, the Northshire Community Food Cupboard, the Dorset Summer Lunch Program, the local Boy and Girl Scout Troops, the Manchester Youth Baseball Team, and the Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament. Additionally, over the years members of the Post and the Auxiliary have provided thousands of hours of community service to a variety of causes.
The criteria for joining the Post are simple. To qualify a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard must have participated in any one of the following wars or operations; WWII, Occupation Service, Korean Service (1950-1954), Korea Duty (1955–present), Vietnam Service, Expeditionary Operations, Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay, Desert Shield/Storm, Bosnia/Kosovo, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary, Afghanistan (2001-present), Iraq (2003-2011), or SSBN Deterrent Patrol Insignia. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 1800 at the Post (280 Depot Street, Manchester) to discuss relevant matters and vote on various proposals.
