As a volunteer adaptive ski instructor and member of the committee which organizes the Bart Center for Adaptive Sports Wounded Military Heroes Weekend, I would like to thank the local businesses from the mountain towns who gave so generously to support this annual fundraiser. We would like to recognize and thank Attorney James Young, Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate, CJ Merrill, Johnny Seesaws, Series 11, Wild Wings XC Center, The Inn at Weston, the Weston Marketplace, the Landgrove Inn, Landgrove Sugarworks, Sugar Bob’s Finest Kind, the Vermont Butcher, Mike and Tammy’s, Lasser Ceramics, Mountain Community Yoga, Lynn Eckhardt, Londonderry Hardware, Clark’s Quality Foods, the Bromley Market, the Garden Market, Grandma Millers, the Green Mountain Pharmacy, Jake’s Restaurant, Taylor Farm, and the Corner Market and Deli. If you have the chance to support any of these generous local businesses, please do so.
The Bart Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “provide people with disabilities and their families the opportunity to enjoy outdoor sports, with a special focus on snow sports.” We provide ski and snowboard lessons and equipment to children and adults with cognitive or physical disabilities.
Every January, the Bart Center runs an entire weekend for wounded and disabled military veterans. The vets and their families arrive on Friday where they are honored at an informal dinner, which has been generously sponsored for the past few years by the Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 in Manchester, Vt. – our thanks to the Post for its continued support! The vets are housed by local families and in hotels and then the vets are provided the necessary adaptive equipment specific to their needs, passes, and traditional equipment by Bromley Mountain, and instruction by our trained volunteers.
On Saturday night, we host a dinner at Bromley where all the locally donated items are either auctioned or raffled off. The resulting funds, along with the cash donations from businesses and individuals, are used to pay for the Wounded Military Heroes Weekend, as well as to fund the center for the next year.
If you are interested in supporting the Bart Center, volunteering as a ski or snowboard instructor or in the summer bike or kayak programs for next year, or if you have any questions please call the Bart Center at 802-824-6849 or go to www.bartadaptive.org. Again, a huge thank you to the generous supporters of this year’s weekend for our disabled vets. We couldn’t do it without you!
