Ludlow Rotary Club thanks community for Chili Cook-off

Dear Editor,

The Ludlow Rotary Club expresses thanks to the cooks and hungry participants of the annual Chili Cook-off. The event was a resounding success and raised funds for distribution to our many worthy causes.

Our community and visitors assembled for a few hours to sample 20 different varieties of chili. About 560 people chowed down 100 gallons of chili that ranged the gamut of flavors from spicy, sweet, and smoky to luxurious and exotic, washed down with cider, mellowed by Italian bread, and cooled by vanilla ice cream.

Special thanks also are in order to Rotarians and family members who were drafted into service. Thanks also to the staff and teens of the Mountainside Youth Shelter who served their own chili and scooped out 15 gallons of ice cream during the event. Thank you also to servers from Green Mountain High School: Erik Heitsmith, Jon Oakes, and Rosie Sacardo.

Everyone who submitted a chili entry was a winner, but particular notice is paid to our People’s Choice favorites: Singleton’s General Store, Lone-Star Authentic Bowl of Red, Some Like it Hot, and Vermont Harvest Chili.

The Rotary Club also recognizes the dedication and fortitude of our judges: Peter Kolenda of the Ludlow Fire Dept., Dennis Barquinero of Jackson Gore, and veteran chili cook Carlos Iglesias. Judges’ Choice awards went to Scauldin’ Cauldron, El Chilicabra, and Echo Lake Express.

Our success also is heavily dependent on the generosity of our sponsors, including Black River Produce/Reinhart Foods. Continuing the tradition of co-founder and former owner Steve Birge, BRP donated and delivered apple cider and decorations such as mums, pumpkins, gourds, and cornstalks.

Other sponsors include Big Eyes Bakery, Blue Sky Trading Co., Clearlake Furniture, Cota & Cota, Garvey & Garvey Property Services, Green Mountain Sugar House, Huntley Wealth Management, HWC Financial LLC, ID3 Design, and LaValley Building Supply.

Thank you also to Ludlow Insurance Agency, Mary Davis Realtor & Assoc., Okemo Mountain Resort, Okemo Realty Inc., Shaw’s Supermarket, Ted Stryhas Builder, The Castle Resort and Spa, Tim Faulkner CPA, Timber Inn Motel, Victoria Blodgett-Prime Lending, and Wilcox Dairy.

In closing, I also thank my co-chairperson Suzanne Garvey and remind her to mark her date planner for the 30th annual Chili Cook-off Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020.

Sincerely,

Glenn Heitsmith,

Ludlow Rotary Club
