A letter from Jennifer Matthews for Mount Holly

Dear Editor,

My name is Jennifer Matthews and I am a candidate for the Mount Holly Select Board.

I love Mount Holly. We have a wonderful community here, and I want to work to ensure that Mount Holly remains the great town it currently is.

We face a number of challenges on the horizon. What does the sale of Okemo to Vail Resorts mean for Mount Holly? What are the ramifications of an aging population on our Rescue Squad, and how might that changing demographic and the new unified school district affect our excellent elementary school? How might the future sale of recreational marijuana, the push for more solar farms, further forest fragmentation, and more intense storms impact our town and our lifestyle? How might all of this impact our taxes? What do we want for Mount Holly?

I believe we can meet these challenges in a way that benefits our community rather than having change forced upon us.

To do this, we need an engaged Select Board, and perhaps a Select Board that includes a woman. Women make up half the population of the town, and women bring a different perspective and different experiences to the table. I think our community can only reap huge benefits with a woman on the Select Board as we look to the future.

I have served Mount Holly in a number of positions over the past 23 years: on the Planning Commission for six years, as an auditor for 12-plus years, and currently as a lister.

In the early 2000s, I pulled together a coalition of six towns, stretching from Interstate 91 to Rutland, in order to oppose and stop the construction of an East-West Highway that would have sliced through the heart of Mount Holly.

My work background here in Vermont over the past 40 years is in small business and non-profit financial management. I owned two small businesses, and I have worked as a senior accountant of one nonprofit, finance director of another, and executive director of a third. I would bring these business, organizational, and financial management skills to the Select Board.

Please contact me with any questions at matthewsinmountholly@gmail.com or at 802-259-2529.

I would welcome the opportunity to serve Mount Holly as a Select Board member and to work for the best future possible for our wonderful town.

I thank you for your time, your consideration, and your vote.
