LUDLOW, Vt. – Okemo Valley Golf Club hosted its annual Club Championship Weekend, July 7 and 8. The championship was an individual 36-hole, stroke-play event.
Ruthie Schamback, three-time defending champion, held a five-stroke lead over Rosemary Burns going into round two, where she made her move. After a splendid 43 on the front side and a birdie on the 10th hole, she pulled within one stroke of Schamback with eight holes to play. Schamback quickly steadied the ship, the key being a three-hole stretch where she birdied the 13th and parred the 14th and 15th to stretch her lead back to three, where it remained to the finish – thus becoming Women’s Club Champion for the fourth time.
The Men’s Championship saw five players within three shots of the lead after round one. By the middle of round two it became a two-man duel. Roger Danyew and Ed Richter separated themselves from the field. Richter pulled ahead by a shot after 13 holes, Danyew responded with key pars on, arguably the toughest, par-fours on the course – the 15th and 16th – to pull ahead by one shot with two holes to play. Ed responded by making a key par on the 17th hole to draw even once again, where the score remained after 18 holes. A playoff ensued on the 10th where Ed Richter prevailed to become a two-time Club Champion.
The Ladies’ Senior Champion title went to Gwen Hofmann. She gradually pulled away from the field in round two, winning her first Senior Ladies’ Championship.
Once again, the Men’s Senior Championship went to Rick Marasa. He played brilliantly over the two days, only being slightly challenged by defending Champion Tom Whalley.
The net winners were: Ladies’, Rosemary Burns; Ladies’ Senior, Shirley MacDonald and Jude Falango tied; Men’s Peter Girouard; and Men’s Senior, Larry Plumb.
