Okemo Mountain Resort awards 2017 scholarships

Okemo scholarshipsLUDLOW, Vt. – Okemo Mountain Resort owners Tim and Diane Mueller are pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s annual scholarship awards. Eight scholarships were awarded to students who have worked at Okemo or who are the dependents of Okemo employees. Criteria used to select the scholarship recipients included academic achievement, co-curricular involvement, community service and the composition of an essay.

Employee Scholarships

Mikayla Call, from Proctorsville, worked at the Summit Cafeteria. She graduated from Green Mountain Union High School and will be attending High Point University, where she plans to major in mathematics and secondary education.

Riley Karl, from Chester, worked at Okemo’s Ski + Ride School. She graduated from Green Mountain Union High School and will be attending the University of Vermont, where she plans to major in public communications.

Margaret Wagner, from Guilford, Conn., worked in Okemo’s Competition Center. She graduated from Guilford High School and will be attending Hobart and William Smith colleges, where she plans to major in economics. Wagner is the daughter of Ellen Shemitz, also of the Competition Center.

Employee Dependent Scholarships

Ben DeCota, from Rutland, is the son of Mark DeCota, who works in Okemo’s accounting department. Ben DeCota graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy and will be attending Franklin Pierce University, where he plans to major in physical therapy.

Aiyana Fortin, from Mt. Holly, is the daughter of Shireen Geimer, who works in Okemo’s accounting department. She graduated from Black River High School and will be attending the University of Vermont, where she plans to major in biomedical engineering.

Sara Ripley, from Proctorsville, is the daughter of Mercury Ripley, who works in Jackson Gore Resort Services. In addition, Sara Ripley works in Okemo’s Adventure Zone. She graduated from Green Mountain Union High School and will be attending Simmons College, where she plans to major in physics.

Rebekah Washburn, from Proctorsvile, is the daughter of Scott Washburn, who works in Okemo’s facilities operations department. She works at Okemo’s Coleman Brook Tavern. She graduated from Green Mountain Union High School and will be attending Cedarville University, where she plans to major in nursing.

Thomas Croney Memorial Scholarship

Joshua Coppola, from Manchester, worked at Okemo’s Ski + Ride School and graduated from Burr and Burton Academy. He will be attending Clarkson University, where he plans to major in computer science. He is the son of Jennifer Atlas and John Coppola, both longtime employees of Okemo’s Ski + Ride School. The Thomas Croney Scholarship is given by the employees of Okemo Mountain Resort in memory of Tom Croney, an Okemo employee who set an example for all through his dedication to Okemo and its guests. This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a technical education.
