CHESTER, Vt. – At 2 p.m. on Oct. 28, Ken Barrett led a cemetery tour at Brookside Cemetery on Main Street in Chester. Barrett started with the grave of Jabez Sargent, Chester’s earliest settler.
He led the group around explaining what he knew about the graves or the history of the individual buried there. One grave was Aaron Leland. He was not only minister of the Baptist Church but also Lieutenant-Governor of Vermont. Of special interest, Barrett pointed out gravestones carved by the Wright brothers of Rockingham, noting their particular carving style. One grave was “Carved by Moses Wright, $171.”
Barrett was cemetery sexton in Chester for decades. No one could have done a better job.
