HARTFORD, Vt. – During the early evening of March 5, Hartford Police were contacted after a person walking a wooded area off I-91 located what appeared to be human remains. The area was secured as a potential crime scene.
The remains were located off the southbound lane of I-91 just north of exit 11.
On March 6, personnel from the Vermont State Police (Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Royalton Barracks, and Crime Scene Search Team) and Hartford Police continued this investigation. The Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations is currently running this investigation. To assist gaining safe access to the scene and continued safe processing of the remains, the Vermont Agency of Transportation temporarily closed one southbound lane of I-91 in the area.
Investigation confirmed the presence of human remains. The remains appear to have been there for at least several months.
The subject has not yet been positively identified. Cause and manner of death have not been positively determined, but the death does not appear suspicious in nature.
The remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington for further analysis.
