Edie Brown, a former CAFC Board member and volunteer, created this lovely rug which is braided with wool fabric, mostly recycled from blankets and clothing which were no longer usable. After the fabric is washed and dried to shrink it, Brown picks a color scheme but does not plan ahead how the colors will appear in the rug. Strips are torn the same width, sewn together, and rolled into balls. Three strips are braided together, adding new balls as needed. The braid is then laced together with a blunt needle and sturdy rug thread. Brown was taught the technique by her husband’s grandmother 40 years ago, and they still have some of the rugs their grandmother braided 75 years ago. Recycling is not a new trend; previous generations knew how to use every part of everything they had. Done in Brown’s spare time, the rugs are durable and long lasting and take two to six months to complete. Brown has made many rugs, mostly for herself and family. Each one is a surprise to her since she does not plan it out ahead.
