BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – On Sept. 2, Chi Chiang Hom and his wife, Chiu Kwan Hom, the original owners of the Joy Wah restaurant located at 287 Rockingham Rd. in Bellows Falls, were excited to reopen the restaurant.
Up until last year, the Homs had previously owned the popular Chinese food restaurant for some 30 years – established in 1987 – before new ownership had taken over the business a year-and-a-half ago. However, after a 14-month sabbatical and other recent business developments, the Homs have returned to the fold and now join forces with partners Gary Tang, who has worked at the restaurant for three years, and Tang’s father, who is head of the kitchen.
“We are very happy to have the restaurant back, and we cannot thank our loyal customers, who we really consider longtime friends, for all the support we have received upon our return,” Chi Chiang Hom said. “The reception we have received from the community has just been a wonderful experience, and my wife and I are excited to continue the traditions we have developed over our 30 years owning the restaurant.”
Tang, who is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., is now manager of the restaurant, learning from the Homs as he and his father settle into their new roles as owners. The immediate plan is for the Homs to remain as business partners and to oversee the operation until everyone involved is completely comfortable in their new roles.
“I am excited to have this opportunity to learn from the Homs, and we are looking forward to continuing to serve our community in the very same traditions they have perfected and upheld all these years.” The Homs are expected to remain actively involved in the restaurant operations moving forward for at least the next year.
“To be honest, my wife and I really enjoyed our 14-month retirement,” Hom said with a chuckle and smile. “But it is important to us that we leave the business in good, capable hands. We are looking forward to reestablishing relationships with all our customers before we revisit those retirement plans.”
Joy Wah officially reopened its doors last Sunday by offering their ever-popular Sunday Buffet and their traditional menu until 9 p.m. As always, they offer complete MSG-free lunch and dinner menus, a full bar, a banquet room, and various gluten-free options. There is also talk of the restaurant adding Japanese sushi options to the menu in the future.
“We went to the very busy reopening of the restaurant on Sunday, and it was so worth the wait,” Bellows Falls resident Karen Stoodley said. “The Homs are amazing people and the food was delicious, as always. It was really nice to see so much support for them.”
The regular restaurant hours are Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Sunday noon to 9:30 p.m.
