If it weren’t for the cars and trucks lined up outside, you could miss it. But you probably could not find a more unpretentious spot with better food anywhere in Vermont. Owners Mike and Tammy Clough focus on stick-to-the-ribs fare, all homemade on-site.

Mike & Tammy’s Main St. Market & Catering includes a deli, catering, grocery store, the Maple Leaf Diner, and a big-game weigh station. Their busiest time begins May and ends in the foliage season, plus winter weekends with skiers.

Mike and Tammy have 40 and 30 years in the restaurant business, respectively. They opened the market in 2007 – it grew and they added the adjacent Maple Leaf Diner three years ago. It’s a family enterprise; Tammy is baker-caterer, Mike cooks, and son Trevor runs the floor. They employ seven workers, all local.

“We work for the local year-round people, the working guy that needs a hot lunch,” says Tammy. “We don’t mind muddy boots.”

dinners, roast chickens and homemade salads and pickled sausages; all pies are homemade and include their mile-high apple pie. Meats are cut fresh.

The grocery store carries the staples. “I fill the niche for the working guys who don’t want to go to the supermarket,” Tammy says.

Catering includes picnic lunches, party platters, kids’ and small cakes for pick-up on-site.

Main St. Market is open 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m., every day. The Maple Leaf opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 2:30 p.m., also every day.
