Kathy and Conrad McCroy opened Clever Cow Designs in May of 2016 in Springfield, Vt., offering quality custom designs at fair prices, “strengthening the relationship between entrepreneurs and their community through promotional products.” They offer designs for apparel, banners, window and sign vinyl, game mats, dice bags, hats, stickers, and more. Most of their work has been signage and branding for local businesses, but other custom designs are available such as window decals, bags, and clothing for personal use.

Clever Cow Designs is a family-owned business, operated by Kathy and Conrad, and occasionally their son Clark. “At first we came to support our friends opening their new business, Dark Mountain Games,” a game store that made its own start in Springfield, where the McCroy’s now share their workspace for their design shop. “Then we met other small business owners, and their customers,” Kathy explained, and the McCroys decided to help promote local businesses by creating their new brands and designs, while also supporting the community by getting individuals to shop local.

“We commonly fall under the direct sales model,” Kathy explained. Custom designs are mainly ordered off their website, and since they have a shared workspace, personal visits are held in their Springfield location by appointment only. They also “host online stores for different local businesses,” included Springfield Humane Society, Springfield Wrestling, and Dark Mountain Games. They are hoping to soon work with Black River Action Team to do an online store for them as well.

To the McCroy’s, Clever Cow Designs is all about the quality of their designs and products, as well as the satisfaction of their local customers, both commercial and individual. “We don’t want you to buy something just so we make money. We want you to buy something because it supports you, your cause, your family, or our community,” Kathy said. “That is what shopping local is about.”
