SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – The Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to welcome owners Kathy and Conrad McCroy to their location at 27 Main Street in downtown Springfield. The Chamber performed a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of their new design and print space, just downstairs from their friends at Dark Mountain Games.
Established in May of 2016, Clever Cow Designs is a family-owned direct retailer that provides custom promotional product options such as T-shirts, hats, CAD-Cut vinyl designs, wall signs, window clings, stickers, car details, and embroidery digitizing services. The company got its start when Kathy and Conrad were on vacation in Springfield during the fall 2015 season. “At first we came to support our friends opening their new business, Dark Mountain Games,” a local game store that made its own start in downtown Springfield. “Then we met other small business owners, and their customers.” Immediately Kathy and Conrad fell in love with the determination and charm of Springfield, and decided they wanted to be a part of the reinvention of the town and its image.
Conrad recalls the decision to start a business, “We worked in an area where you can always get it somewhere cheaper or online. Customers were indifferent to you and your products. Why care to buy quality or buy with someone who puts back into the community? It was all just a good idea to the people where we came from.” But Springfield was different, “Both owners and customers cared about what was going on both in and around their business. It was ‘my friend’ or ‘my neighbor’ or ‘so-and-so’s kid.’ It was ‘the rich history of this building’, ‘this has grown into something more.’ Springfield has forward momentum, and we wanted to be there to help promote businesses and community through their image.”
That philosophy extends into their products and pricing as well. “We live here, we want you to be happy with our products,” Kathy insists. “We don’t want you to buy something just so we make money. We want you to buy something because it supports you, your cause, your family, our community. That is what shopping local is about.”
Kathy and Conrad have been busy spreading the word about their services and lining up jobs. Among other projects, they printed the iconic red promotional reusable shopping bags for the Vermont Apple Festival. The bags are beautiful, and we’re so impressed with the quality and attention to detail. You couldn’t ask for nicer people to work with, and the folks at Clever Cow were very conscientious and helpful throughout the design process. In a world where phone calls are often answered by robots and products are bought and sold through impersonal websites, Conrad and Kathy are truly a pleasure to do business with. We think they’re the cat’s meow, and the cow’s moo!
