Up Attic Thrift Store & Bookstore
71 Main Street
The Up Attic Thrift Store is located in the halls of the Charlestown Congregational Church. On the first floor is a bookstore full of used books for both adults and children. Up the stairs is the thrift store full of clothing for men, women, and children and other kitchen and housewares, toys, etc. All items were donated.
The Up Attic Thrift Store has been in operation out of the church for 30 years, and it’s run mostly by volunteers. Volunteers put in approximately 2,500 hours a year at the store, accepting and sorting donations, stocking the items on the racks and shelves, and operating the store during business hours. “Most of the volunteers are retired. In their past lives they were teachers, nurses, office professionals, and more. Now they serve the community in another way,” wrote Rev. Susan Grant Rosen.
The proceeds from Up Attic support the church and “its Discretionary Fund, which aids area residents with basic needs. Thus, when you bought that blouse at the Up Attic, you helped a neighbor.”
Clothes, wares, and books are priced affordably, but their doors are opened up to community members in times of great need – such as the aftermath of a house fire – free of charge.
The Congregational Church is always open to donations of gently used items, except for electronics. They are looking for donations of older children’s clothing and toys. Donations can be dropped off at the back entrance of the church.
Up Attic Thrift Store and Bookstore are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
