Aptly named Vermont Barns creates custom, quality timber frame and post and beam barns throughout Southern Vermont and beyond. Both timber frame and post and beam offer flexibility of open space. In this case, the term “barn” covers many dwellings beyond those that house animals. Their portfolio includes exclusive custom-home “barn-style” estates, energy-efficient barn homes and retreats, horse barns, carriage houses, workshops, gazebos and garages.

Vermont Barns, located in Bondville, Vt., is the barn division of The Wadsworth Company, “a custom timber framing, woodworking, and home building company dedicated to excellence in design and superb craftsmanship.”

Starting in 1992, Rob Wadsworth and his team of skilled carpenters worked for several years on additions and custom millwork projects in Southern Vermont. Along the way, it was the beauty and style of the timber frame home that inspired Wadsworth to focus his energy and passion, along with that of his team of skilled craftsmen, on developing a combination of detailed project management, a focus on craftsmanship with the efficiency of structurally insulated panels, to create homes, barns, and dwellings to be proud of. Perhaps the most notable aspect of a Wadsworth home and barn are the craftsmanship details like forged metal railings, and carriage style overhead doors and according to Wadsworth they handle all the details, “One call to us and we do everything else.”

The first barn Wadsworth built was on his own property in 2004, and he realized that “Everyone needed a barn” and Vermont Barns was born.

Some of the smaller post and beam barns can be purchased as kit, assembled by do-it-yourself builders. Larger timber frame barns usually require their team of builders and craftsmen to construct. Often their custom designs are modified to suit the landscape of the property it is being built on.

Although their projects primarily happen in and around the Stratton area, they also consider themselves a “traveling company” and will work with other contactors throughout New England to seamlessly create their designs further afield. Trending lately are car barns for storing and showcasing cars.
